NY CREATES Begins Discussions on New Strategic Relationship With SEMI

New Organization Driving Tech Investment and Growth in New York to Seek Comprehensive Industry Engagement with the World’s Largest Advanced Electronics Industry Association

Half Moon Bay, CA – The New York Center for Research, Economic Advancement, Technology, Engineering and Science (NY CREATES) today announced discussions to form a new Strategic Engagement with SEMI, the global industry association representing the electronics manufacturing and design supply chain. The announcement was made at the SEMI Industry Strategy Symposium, attended by several hundred C-Level semiconductor executives.

Formed as a new and flexible industry interface in New York, NY CREATES is tasked with bridging academic, research, and industry innovation of the advanced electronics sector in New York. As a conduit for Empire State Development and the State University of New York, NY CREATES builds on the success of the State’s ongoing investment in programs such as Albany Nanotech, AIM Photonics, and SUNY Polytechnic Institute.  More recently, NY CREATES has worked to secure major research and industry investments in New York from Tokyo Electron, Applied Materials, IBM, and Cree.

For more than two decades, industry, government, and academic partners in New York have worked with SEMI to grow the US’s newest semiconductor cluster. This engagement would formalize many of those relationships to build a workforce pipeline, provide industry guidance and standards, and drive advanced technology innovation.

As discussions continue, NY CREATES and SEMI will focus on key areas impacting the growth of the global advanced electronics industry, including:

  • Workforce Development – NY CREATES seeks to be an active and early partner in SEMI’s comprehensive workforce development program aimed at improving talent hiring and training in the microelectronics industry.
  • Standards Development – NY CREATES will continue to serve as a strong partner and resource in uniting public and private investment in alignment with SEMI standards. SEMI represents thousands of members across the supply chain in developing global standards.
  • Technology Advancement – As home to the most advanced collaborative semiconductor R&D in North America, NY CREATES offers unique global technology opportunities for SEMI members and represents more than $20 billion in public and private investment.

NY CREATES Chief Operating Officer Paul Kelly said, “Embarking on this new path with SEMI is an ideal next step for NY CREATES, as we seek to further establish our role as one of the world’s leading semiconductor R&D institutions.  We are thrilled to explore this opportunity and to advance this industry that impacts so much of our everyday lives.”

SEMI Americas President David Anderson said, “SEMI is eager to explore expanding its longstanding relationship with New York State through its newly established NY CREATES. Our discussions with NY CREATES are an important step in evaluating a potential collaboration to help build a world-class workforce and advance technology innovation.”
