Our NY CREATES team was proud to attend SEMICON West this year, held in San Francisco from July 9-11. We were delighted to share our progress and collaborative efforts with our partners, highlighting our commitment to advancing the semiconductor industry. Check out the highlights:

Signing the MOU with SEMI

A significant highlight of our participation was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SEMI. This agreement underscores our dedication to promoting environmentally sustainable practices within the semiconductor industry. Together with SEMI, we aim to focus on joint development agreements and research programs that align with sustainable strategies, pushing the industry towards greener practices.

Workforce Development Seminar

Our Human Resources leaders, Justin Rivers and William Bronner, delivered an impactful presentation titled “Finding and Keeping Talent: Creating Inclusive Recruitment and Retention Strategies” at the SEMICON West Workforce Development seminar. They shared essential workforce development strategies and provided valuable insights into the industry’s future.

Additionally, Justin and Will participated in an exclusive interview and Q&A session on the NY CREATES NanoChat Podcast with hosts Steve Ference and Jenn Tetrault. This session delved deeper into the workforce development strategies they presented at the seminar, offering listeners a comprehensive understanding of our initiatives.

RPI To Host NORDTECH Workforce Development Summit

Cultivating future chips and semiconductor workers to fill nationwide shortage

TROY, N.Y. —  On July 18, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and NORDTECH will host a day long Workforce Development Summit on the RPI campus that will bring together government, industry, non-profits, and academic partners to address education and workforce development in chips and semiconductors critical to the prosperity and security of the nation.

The event will feature a keynote speech on Today’s Workforce Development Realities and Strategies by Michelle Williams-Vaden, Deputy & Sr. Director, Strategy & Partnerships, SEMI Foundation; a panel discussion moderated by RPI President Marty Schmidt ’81, Ph.D. on Propelling the U.S. Workforce; exciting and informative presentations; breakout sessions on themes of Exposure, Education, and Experience; and a poster session featuring Emerging Technologies in Microelectronics, Educational Pathways and Curriculum Development, and Innovation in Teaching Methods.

The Northeast Regional Defense Technology Hub (NORDTECH) is a regional coalition of public and private sector experts in and around New York State, established as one of the eight hubs by Department of Defense (DoD) Microelectronics Commons program. NORDTECH’s five founding members include NY CREATES, University at Albany, Cornell University, RPI, and IBM. In addition to the founding members, NORDTECH consists of members from academia, government organizations, and industry, including the defense industrial base and small/medium enterprises. NORDTECH brings distributed expertise and capabilities of the Northeast to create onshore scalability across the research, prototyping, and commercial transition of leading-edge microelectronics in support of Department of Defense (DoD) Microelectronics Commons program goals.

“When government, industry, and academia work together, goals are met and economies flourish,” said Schmidt. “Together, RPI and our fellow NORDTECH members will grow the semiconductor workforce in the Capital Region and beyond by inspiring students, engaging them, and immersing them in this exciting field.”

Dave Anderson, President of NY CREATES, said, “NY CREATES is proud to play a key role in NORDTECH with our partners to grow the Microelectronics Commons network across the country. This RPI/NORDTECH-hosted engagement is a positive step forward for finding efficient and effective ways to support critical semiconductor-focused workforce development efforts in New York State and beyond. I was proud to participate in Thursday’s panel discussion and share NY CREATES’ efforts and the ways in which we can collaboratively reach students and provide up-skilling opportunities to current workers.”

It is estimated that tens of thousands of jobs in the chips and semiconductor fields will go unfilled in 2030 because of the labor shortage. This comes at a time when the United States is hoping to produce more chips than ever.

“To address the workforce needs of the chips and semiconductor sector, we must reach diverse students in engaging ways and create accessible pathways that lead to fulfilling careers,” said Shekhar Garde, Ph.D., dean of RPI’s School of Engineering. “With NORDTECH, we are uniting partners from all areas of the microelectronics sector to do just that. We look forward to engaging discussions with representatives from industry, academia, and government attending the Workforce Development Summit.”

NORDTECH members and participants include large companies spanning the defense industrial base, industry across the semiconductor manufacturing pipeline with key core facility capabilities, universities and small companies with technical project expertise and prototyping facilities, and universities and community colleges as vital participants in developing the next generation of semiconductor-enabled careers.

The event will be conducted in the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies from 9AM to 5PM. It is free and open to all participants. Registration is available online at https://chips.rpi.edu/nordtech-wfd-summit.

Congratulations to the NY CREATES-led R&D team on the publication of their manuscript “Enabling 300 mm Wafer-Scale Fabrication of Superconducting Quantum Devices” by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. This work presents important advances in superconducting quantum technologies, showcasing the innovations required to enable wafer-scale fabrication of quantum devices. The advancements discussed in this paper can pave the way for new developments in single-flux-quantum logic, quantum computing and sensing, enhancing scalability and performance.

Strategic Partnership Aims to Foster New Advancements in Sustainable Initiatives in the Semiconductor Industry

San Francisco, Calif. – The New York Center for Research, Economic Advancement, Technology, Engineering, and Science (NY CREATES) and SEMI, the global industry association representing the semiconductor and electronics design and manufacturing supply chain, are proud to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a strategic framework aimed at fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and promoting environmentally sustainable practices within the semiconductor industry. This MOU sets the stage for joint development agreements and research programs that will align with sustainable strategies for the industry as it continues to grow, with an emphasis on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) abatement to further move the industry toward greener practices. 

“While the semiconductor industry is set to ride the Artificial Intelligence wave to tremendous growth, we face serious challenges, with sustainability standing out as a top concern,” said Ajit Manocha, SEMI President and CEO. “Unprecedented challenges around climate change and PFAS call for unprecedented actions and public-private partnership. This agreement is a positive step forward in aligning the efforts of the SEMI Sustainability Initiative and Semiconductor Climate Consortium (SCC) with government programs to maximize the impact.”

NY CREATES and SEMI Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Advance Environmental Sustainability

This MOU sets the foundation for entering into one or more joint development agreements that foster innovative solutions to address semiconductor and related manufacturing challenges that have an impact on the environment and community. These challenges are difficult to solve, and a collaboration such as this can help to bring together the best minds from the ecosystem to find solutions. For example, novel approaches can be created and implemented to reduce greenhouse gases, which can be replaced with alternatives using sustainable technologies and new abatement technologies. These activities can help us better address PFAS concerns and ensure these chemicals are properly managed when used throughout the semiconductor manufacturing process.

NY CREATES and SEMI will work closely to align their research initiatives, prioritizing sustainability as a core component of all projects. The SEMI Scope 1 working group within the Semiconductor Climate Consortium and SEMI PFAS working groups will be spearheading this research together with researchers at NY CREATES.

This partnership builds on the momentum in New York created by Governor Hochul’s $1 billion investment to fund the construction of a cutting-edge High NA Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography Center that will support the research and development of the world’s most complex and powerful semiconductors. NY CREATES and industry partners have also agreed to a range of sustainability commitments throughout the construction and operational phases of the project that are closely aligned with New York’s nation-leading Green CHIPS program, including use of best available technology for greenhouse gas emission reduction; prioritization of renewable energy, with preference for New York sources; and pursuit of LEED certification for new buildings related to the project.

Additionally, partners are committed to integrating sustainability as a primary goal of R&D activities, including sustainable semiconductor manufacturing processes; materials use; waste reuse and reclamation; and fab design. Now, the collaboration between NY CREATES and SEMI will be able to further leverage this new state-of-the-art center to drive innovations prioritizing sustainability and environmental stewardship.

This collaboration is especially timely as the industry increasingly recognizes the importance of environmental sustainability. As NY CREATES looks to support the National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC) initiative under the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act, both organizations are enabling advancements that integrate sustainable practices into the semiconductor supply chain.

On Monday, June 10th, Normanside Country Club set the stage for NY CREATES’ first annual charity golf tournament, an event that exceeded expectations and raised over $130,000 for the Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) Foundation. The generous contributions from this fundraiser will play a crucial role in advancing the region’s high-tech workforce through the new Applied Technology Education Center (ATEC).

The tournament brought together NY CREATES employees, industry partners, and community members for a fun day of golf, company camaraderie, and fundraising activities. Participants enjoyed the beautiful Normanside Country Club golf course, cooler weather, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the region’s future workforce.
