“For the study, James Schlett, director of research and communications at the center, reviewed patents issued to local researchers and inventors working in the semiconductor industry in 2025. Schlett found that nearly 600 patents involving semiconductor technology were issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to local scientists last year. More than 250 of those patents were assigned to IBM, which conducts its quantum computer chip research and development at NY Creates’ Albany NanoTech campus.”
“Tokyo Electron, a Japanese company that does all of its U.S. research at Albany NanoTech, was listed as receiving the second-highest number of patents, between 100 and 125, and GlobalFoundries, which has its headquarters and Fab 8 manufacturing facility in Saratoga County, was third on the list.”
